Developing effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing; developing the water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise.

CRITERIA for STAGE SIX

At this stage children learn effective swimming skills, co-ordinated breathing across all strokes and swimming 25 metres using a stroke of their choice.

Before they can progress to the next stage they must be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of preparation for exercise

  • Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into backstroke

  • Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into front crawl

  • Swim 10 metres wearing clothes

  • Swim 25m front crawl to include rhythmical breathing

  • Swim front crawl to include at least six rhythmical breaths (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)

  • Swim breaststroke to include at least six rhythmical breaths (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)

  • Swim butterfly to include at least three rhythmical breaths (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)

  • Swim 25 metres, choice of stroke is optional (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)

  • Perform a ‘shout and signal’ rescue

  • Perform a surface dive

  • Exit the water without using steps

  • Be able to do a sitting dive

 

 

Stage 6 continued - Personal survival Level

 

To enter water at least full reach depth from the side of the pool by sliding in from a sitting position.

  • Tread water for 2 minutes

  • Swim 25m to a floating object

  • Take up and hold the H.E.L.P position for 5 minutes in the water of at least full reach depth

  • Swim 50m retaining the floating object

  • Climb out of water at least full reach depth without using the steps or rail or any other assistance

  • Answer 3 questions on when the skills learned might be used- Personal Survival Level 1.
